This painting series began with photographs my twin sister took of loved ones encountering works of art. By translating these images into paintings, I attempt to inhabit her perspective - recreating both her gaze and the gestures of those photographed standing before artworks. Taken in galleries and museums across Barcelona, New York, Toronto, and Montreal, these photographs layer contemporary figures against the backdrop of diverse art histories.

The series reflects my interest in photography as a means of preserving fleeting moments, and in painting as a medium that transforms those moments through the softened, pastel-tinted lens of memory and nostalgia. This work also explores how memory is shaped through multiple acts of looking: my sister's experience of the moment, the camera's record of it, and my own translation of the image into paint.

Justine with Art equally considers the role of the viewer within a work of art. By depicting people engaged in acts of looking, the paintings ask whether an artwork can exist independently of its audience, or whether meaning is always shaped through the presence of those who encounter it.
